Berlin’s Hauptbahnhof train station has partially closed for the next two months for planned construction work, which will cause disruption to regional rail services.
The project, scheduled to run from 17 February to 22 April, is designed to allow trains to reach platforms “more quickly and flexibly” at the Berlin station. But it involves closing four of the station’s eight tracks leading to diversions and cancellations to many services.
Although Deutsche Bahn’s S-Bahn suburban trains will not be affected by this work as they are located on the upper levels of the station.
DB said in a statement that there would also be two full weekend closures of Hauptbahnhof’s entire underground level from 21-24 March and over the Easter holidays from 18-22 April. During these two periods, long-distance trains will stop at other stations in Berlin.
“Berlin will continue to have good long-distance transport connections during the construction work,” added DB. “Only on the weekends of the full closures will the long-distance trains probably stop at other Berlin long-distance stations instead of Berlin Hauptbahnhof and Südkreuz.”
