Lufthansa’s new short-haul subsidiary City Airlines has taken delivery of its first new Airbus A320neo aircraft ahead of planned network expansion.
The nascent airline, which commenced operations last June, operates feeder flights for Lufthansa from its main hubs at Munich and Frankfurt. The new 180-seat A320neo will enter service in May and brings the carrier’s growing fleet to eight aircraft.
In a statement, the Lufthansa Group said the airline is making “an important contribution to strengthening the competitiveness of the short-haul network… and supporting the planned growth on long-haul routes”.
The carrier expects to take delivery of seven additional A320neos this year (five of which will be new aircraft) and, from the end of 2026, will also receive the first of 40 Airbus A220-300s on order.
In line with its expanding fleet, the carrier also plans to add seven new European routes to its network this summer, with flights to Barcelona, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Düsseldorf, Rome, Edinburgh, Seville and Bordeaux.
The Lufthansa City Airlines network currently comprises 17 destinations.
